Your first Spanish questions and usable replies
Read each question once, then cover the English meaning and answer aloud. Replace the sample details with facts that are true for you.
What is your name?
Try: Me llamo Maya. ¿Y tú?
Where are you from?
Try: Soy de Canadá, pero ahora vivo en Austin.
Why are you learning Spanish?
Try: Porque quiero hablar con mis compañeros de trabajo.
How long have you been studying Spanish?
Try: Llevo unos tres meses.
What is most difficult for you?
Try: Responder rápido cuando no conozco una palabra.
Useful Spanish recovery phrases
These phrases buy time without ending the conversation or switching immediately to English.
A realistic first conversation
Read both roles once. Then hide the “You” lines and produce your own answer before checking the example.
What if the next question was not in your lesson?
¿Qué hiciste el fin de semana?
What did you do at the weekend?
Pause, answer one idea, then add one detail:
Fui a un mercado con unos amigos. No sé cómo explicar todo, pero fue divertido.
I went to a market with some friends. I do not know how to explain everything, but it was fun.
Make your reply easier to understand
- Spanish vowels stay relatively consistent. Keep each vowel short and clear instead of turning it into a long English-style glide.
- Let the stress fall naturally on the marked syllable. If there is a written accent, that syllable carries the stress.
- Connect short groups of words, but do not rush. A steady rhythm gives you time to plan the next complete idea.
