Your first German questions and usable replies
Read each question once, then cover the English meaning and answer aloud. Replace the sample details with facts that are true for you.
What is your name?
Try: Ich heiße Maya. Und Sie?
Where are you from?
Try: Ich komme aus Kanada, aber jetzt wohne ich in Hamburg.
Why are you learning German?
Try: Weil ich in Deutschland arbeite.
How long have you been learning German?
Try: Seit ungefähr drei Monaten.
What is difficult for you?
Try: Schnell zu antworten, wenn jemand eine neue Frage stellt.
Useful German recovery phrases
These phrases buy time without ending the conversation or switching immediately to English.
A realistic first conversation
Read both roles once. Then hide the “You” lines and produce your own answer before checking the example.
What if the next question was not in your lesson?
Sprechen Sie bei der Arbeit schon manchmal Deutsch?
Do you already speak German sometimes at work?
Pause, answer one idea, then add one detail:
Ja, bei kurzen Gesprächen. In längeren Besprechungen brauche ich noch Hilfe.
Yes, in short conversations. I still need help in longer meetings.
Make your reply easier to understand
- German word stress is usually steady. Keep the stressed syllable clear instead of giving every syllable equal weight.
- The ch in ich is lighter than the ch in Bach. Practise each sound inside a complete useful phrase rather than forcing one sound everywhere.
- Put the conjugated verb in the expected position. A short sentence with reliable word order is easier to understand than a longer improvised one.
