How long does it take to learn Russian?

How long does it take to learn Russian for real conversation?

There is no honest universal number. A rehearsed first conversation can be prepared quickly; understanding unfamiliar speakers and responding flexibly requires sustained practice. Define the conversation you need, then measure what you can actually do aloud.

1Milestones instead of one promise
2A first speaking target
3A repeatable practice loop
Practical answer

Your timeline depends on the conversation you want to handle

“Learn Russian” can mean reading Cyrillic, introducing yourself, travelling independently, or discussing unfamiliar topics. These are different outcomes. A useful plan moves from prepared production to flexible response rather than waiting for one final fluency date.

First prepared conversation

Introduce yourself, explain why you are learning, and use a recovery phrase.

Practise: This is narrow enough to rehearse immediately.

Routine situations

Handle recurring exchanges such as a café, transport, or workplace greeting.

Practise: Build several complete scripts, then vary the details.

Flexible conversation

Follow unfamiliar speech, choose grammar in real time, and repair misunderstandings.

Practise: This grows through sustained exposure, feedback, and repeated speaking.

Use it in context

Useful Russian phrases and speaking cues

Say each complete phrase, read what it does in the conversation, and use the speaking cue to make the important sound or rhythm clearer.

Say you started recentlyЯ неда́вно на́чал / начала́ учи́ть ру́сский.I recently started learning Russian.Speaking focus: Use на́чал if you are male and начала́ if you are female; stress да́, на́ or ла́, и́, and ру́с.
Describe a milestoneЯ уже́ могу́ расска́зать о себе́.I can already talk about myself.Speaking focus: Stress же́, гу́, за́, and бе́.
Say what you practiseЯ трени́рую коро́ткие разгово́ры.I practise short conversations.Speaking focus: Stress ни́, ро́, and во́.
Name a challengeМне тру́дно бы́стро отвеча́ть.It is difficult for me to answer quickly.Speaking focus: Stress тру́, бы́, and ча́.
Set the next goalЯ хочу́ поговори́ть с колле́гой по-ру́сски.I want to speak Russian with a colleague.Speaking focus: Stress чу́, ри́, ле́, and ру́с.

A realistic beginning-to-end conversation

Read both roles once. Then cover the “You” turns and produce your own reply before checking the example.

Local speakerКак давно́ вы у́чите ру́сский?How long have you been learning Russian?
YouНеда́вно, о́коло трёх ме́сяцев.Recently, for about three months.
Local speakerЧто вы уже́ уме́ете?What can you already do?
YouЯ могу́ расска́зать о себе́ и сде́лать зака́з в кафе́.I can talk about myself and order in a café.
Local speakerА что сейча́с са́мое тру́дное?And what is the most difficult thing now?
YouМне тру́дно бы́стро отвеча́ть.It is difficult for me to answer quickly.
Local speakerКак вы трени́руетесь?How do you practise?
YouЯ трени́рую коро́ткие разгово́ры и меня́ю вопро́сы.I practise short conversations and change the questions.
Unexpected turn

Prepare for the question that changes the script

Како́й у вас сле́дующий конкре́тный план?
What is your next specific plan?

Pause, answer the main point, then add one useful detail:

На э́той неде́ле я хочу́ поговори́ть по-ру́сски с колле́гой за ко́фе.
This week I want to speak Russian with a colleague over coffee.

Speaking guidance

Make the next reply easier to produce

  • Track observable actions: a question you understood, a reply you produced, or a misunderstanding you repaired. Time spent alone does not show speaking readiness.
  • Repeat the same conversation with changed details and follow-ups. Flexibility grows when the structure is familiar but the exact turn is not.
  • Keep pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and listening tied to a conversation milestone. This makes review more useful than an unrelated list.
